“Serratia ficaria SH7”, this is the name of the bacterium, which scientists and restorers have used to clean up all the dirt accumulated in the white Carrara marble of the new sacristy, where the Medici are buried.
A microorganism, which feeds on glue, phosphates and oil.
The design was preceded by a long photographic campaign with infrared and ultraviolet lights, to ascertain the conservation status of the sculptures, and which ultimately led to the choice of cleaning.
