The candle holder angel is a marble sculpture executed between 1494 and 1495.
The work was born during the artist’s Bolognese period, as he fled from Florence and took refuge in Bologna where, thanks to the noble Giovan Francesco Aldrovandi, he found employment with the friars of San Domenico.
And it is precisely here that he will receive the task of completing the prestigious Ark of San Domenico, a complex of masterpieces created by Nicola Pisano and Niccolò dell’arca, but which still required a few accompanying statues; this is how The Angel Holder was born.
A 51.5 cm marble statue depicting a winged angel, a solid and compact figure full of potential energy, which moves away from the classic forms of the Renaissance.
