The work, which was created within 2 years of Bernini’s work, was commissioned by Pope Clement IX, to be placed on Ponte Sant’Angelo.
But being considered too beautiful to leave it out in the weather, it was moved inside the church of Sant’Andrea delle Fratte, and was replaced with a copy.
The copy, however, was made by the students of Bernini himself, under his strict direction.
